Wolf of Wall Street actress Margot Robbie has been cast in the lead role of a Barbie live action movie, it has been confirmed.
Robbie is the third actress to be linked to the project centred on the hugely popular plastic doll toy franchise.
Amy Schumer had previously been lined up to play the character but eventually had to pull out of the project as a result of scheduling conflicts.
Anne Hathaway then emerged as the frontrunner to take on the role, though any suggestion the Dark Knight Rises actress was set for the part remained pure speculation.
Now Robbie, 28, has bagged the part.
She comes with some experience of sorts, having played the part of Harley Quinn in the Suicide Squad movie adaptation based on the DC Comics characters of the same name.
“I’m so honoured to take on this role and produce a film that I believe will have a tremendously positive impact on children and audiences worldwide,” Robbie said of the project in a press release.
“I can’t imagine better partners than Warner Bros and Mattel to bring this film to the big screen.”
The film is a collaboration between Mattel Films and Warner Bros.
“Margot is the ideal producer and actress to bring Barbie to life on screen in a fresh and relevant way for today’s audiences,” Toby Emmerich, chairman of Warner Bros Pictures Group, said.
Filming has not yet start but the Barbie movie is due to be released in 2020.
