Italian football club Pro Piacenza lose 20-0 after fielding just seven players.

Burton Albion fans might want to spare a thought for Italian Serie C side Pro Piacenza.

The Brewers made headlines earlier this year after slipping to a 9-0 thrashing at the hands of Manchester City in the League Cup semi-finals.

Though a subsequently 1-0 loss in the second-leg of the tie may have spared some blushes, it remains one of the most memorable thrashing in recent times.

Football has featured plenty of one-sided affairs down the years – Wigan once lost 9-1 to Tottenham in the Premier League while Ipswich Town hold the most unwanted of records after slipping to a 9-0 loss at the hands of Manchester United.

But it could be worse for fans of Ipswich, Burton and Wigan – they could be Pro Piacenza supporters.

On Sunday, February 17th, the Serie C side took a trip to league rivals Cuneo.

The club is in dire straits. They are already facing a winding-up order over unpaid debts and came into Sunday’s game facing a difficult proposition.

Pro Piacenza had just seven players available for the game and, had they opted to postpone the game with Cuneo, they would have faced automatic expulsion from the league for their fourth postponement of the season.

A decision was made, and the game went ahead with Pro Piacenza opting to field six youth-team players and, most bizarrely of all, a masseuse.

An 18-year-old by the name of Cirigliano, was named captain and coach in the absence of any formal staff, with many players absent after reportedly not being paid since August.

Local media outlet Sport Piacenza is reporting that the club opted to name their masseur in the starting line-up after one of the youth-team players forgot to bring his ID.

Cuneo, who had scored a total of just 18 goals in their previous 24 Serie C fixtures this season ran riot, racking up a 16-0 lead by half-time.

Striker Hicham Kanis even helped himself to a double hat-trick. They went easy on their opponents in the second half though – not that any fans would have been aware of it.

Sport Piacenza ended to its live coverage of the match just three minutes into the game writing: “We refuse to continue the live match report. We postpone the appointment with our readers until the end of this farce, when we communicate the final result.”

The game ended 20-0.

Pro Piacenza are bottom of Serie C with eight points from their 20 games, following an eight-point deduction.

They are 12 points off second bottom Arzchena having played seven games fewer.
