Once a star in the heart of the Manchester City midfield, Elano is facing a year in prison after formal assault charges were filed against the Brazil international for allegedly assaulting the owner of a rival football team.

Now 34, Elano – who has also played for Shakhtar Donetsk and Galatasaray in a well-travelled career -has been under investigation by police in India since late last year.

It followed an incident involving Elano and FC Goa co-owner Dattaraj Salgaocar during the final of the Indian Super League in December.

Elano’s side Chennayin triumphed 3-2 in the chaotic game over FC Goa, but the midfielder found himself arrested immediately after the match amid accusations he assaulted Salgaocar.

Three months on from the confrontation, and the incident is far from over, with Margao police inspector CL Patil confirming to the Times of India that Elano – full name Elano Blumer – is to be charged.

“It is very clear by evidence that Dattaraj was assaulted. The chargesheet is filed and now it will be presented before the court,” said CL Patil.

According to their report, Elano has been charged under sections relating to wrongful restraint, voluntarily causing hurt and intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace.

Fifteen witnesses are cited in the report, including two FC Goa players and fellow co-owner Shrinivas Dempo, while medical reports detailing the injuries incurred have also been presented.

“The Court will issue him a summons. The summons can be served through Interpol or the advocate could also appear on his behalf,” Patil added.

Elano loves Manchester City Some of the Brazilian's greatest hits for City.

Currently back in Brazil and unlikely to return for what would be a third stint in the Indian Super League, Elano remains something of a cult figure among Manchester City fans.

Though he was only with the club for two seasons under Sven-Goran Eriksson from 2007-09, the Brazilian became known for his excellent passing range and superb ability from dead ball scenarios.

Back with Santos for a third spell with the club, Elano has only made one appearance so far in 2016.
