Paul Rudd is back as Ant Man and this time he’s brought reinforcements in the form of Evangeline Lilly as The Wasp for the sequel to the 2015 hit.
Rudd has already reprised his role as criminal-turned-superhero Scott Lang in Captain America: Civil war – a move that saw Lang’s Ant Man go from super-small to super-sized with entertaining results.
Unfortunately, in the new first glimpse trailer for Ant Man and The Wasp, his antics alongside Captain America appear to have landed Lang in a lot of trouble.
Fear not, though, because Lilly’s Hope van Dyne and Michael Douglas’ Dr. Hank Pym are on hand to provide a solution – or should that be reinforcements?
They’ve got a new mission for Lang and this one requires reinforcements with Lilly’s van Dyne donning the Wasp suit to create a memorable on-screen superhero combo.
Previous pitched as the closest fans are likely to get to a romantic comedy in the Marvel superhero universe, Ant Man And The Wasp still looks set to boast plenty in the way of the sort of eye-catching visuals that made the first film such a treat.
People, cars and entire buildings get shrunk down in the trailer, while there are also ample opportunities for things to get big. Really big. In anyone else’s hands this sort of dumb scenario might play out a little shoddily but its clear Marvel know what they are doing.
Elsewhere, Laurence Fishburne pops up in a blink-or-miss-it appearance. He’s set to play Bill Foster, a friend of Pym’s potentially turned foe. In the comics, Foster is better known as Goliath and is capable of increasing size and mass to gigantic proportions.
Throw in an appearance from Hollywood’s current go-to guy for all things bad guy, Walton Goggins, and you have the makings of an intriguing superhero effort which also includes a role for Michalle Pfeiffer as Pym’s wife.
Ant Man and The Wasp arrives in cinemas on August 3.
