The identity of the iconic Marvel villain, and the actor most likely playing him alongside Hugh Jackman in Wolverine 3 has been all-but-confirmed ahead of the film’s release.
Much secrecy surrounds the new Wolverine film, which will be Jackman’s last as Logan, with director James Mangold so far remaining tight-lipped on details ahead of the film’s March 3, 2017 release.
However, a series of hints dropped in recent weeks appear to confirm both the villain facing off against the X-Men favourite and the actor most likely playing him.
Who will Logan face in Wolverine 3?
According to various reports, Wolverine 3 will see Logan encounter Mr Sinister in a development that is sure to excite fans.
Bryan Singer all but confirmed the presence of Mr Sinister in the new film during the closing moments of the director’s commentary for X-Men: Apocalypse, as reported by Cinemablend.
What happened at the end of X-Men Apocalypse?
In the final moments of the film, a group of men, led by a mysterious man in a black suit, enter the Weapon X facility at Alkali Lake. The suited man goes into a nearby cabinet and picks up a vial of Wolverine’s DNA – Weapon X – before carefully putting it in his briefcase.
Audiences then learned that the men are representatives of the Essex Corporation, the company owned by none other than Nathaniel Essex aka Mister Sinister.
Who is Mr Sinister?
Second only to the likes of Magneto and Apocalypse when it comes to the greatest X-Men villains of all-time, Mr Sinister is a mutant who made himself more powerful by experimenting on other mutants in order to boost and evolve his own powers – often with deadly consequences.
Mr Sinister is also capable of turning people into mutants, via experimentation, and adapting other’s powers to serve his own uses.
Who will play Mr Sinister?
Though his identity remains firmly under wraps, two actors are currently the frontrunners to play Mr Sinister in the finished movie, having both signed up to appear in the film in largely unspecified parts.
The Hollywood Reporter confirmed Richard E. Grant had joined the cast in the mysterious role of a “mad scientist” which may indicate he could well be the one to play Nathaniel Essex and, eventually, Mr Sinister.
Alternatively, Narcos star Boyd Holbrook has also been brought on board in a role described by The Wrap as the “lead villain” and a “a relentless, calculating and intense head of Security for a global enterprise.”
Thought to be an entirely original character, away from the comics, Holbrook’s current popularity, coupled with his age compared to that of the veteran Grant, means he could be the better suited for the physicality the role of Mr Sinister will most likely require.
What will happen in Wolverine 3?
While details remain sketchy, it has been suggested that the film will be something of a road movie riffing on Mark Millar’s Wolverine comic series Old Man Logan.
Patrick Stewart will definitely return to the role of Professor X, with the pair potentially taking on the Essex Corporation.
One thing is for sure: with both Professor X and Mr Sinister on board, Wolverine 3 is shaping up to be quite the bow out for Jackman.
