Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2017 list has named an unlikely city as the world’s number one destination.
The publication has given the French city of Bordeaux top spot in an unlikely countdown that ignores expected popular getaway spots like London, New York and Paris.
Bordeaux was chosen due to a boom in wine production and the “gastronomic revolution” happening in the South of France.
They used to call her the ‘Sleeping Beauty’, but – though she’s hit the snooze button a few times – Bordeaux is now wide awake and ready for action,” Lonely Planet said.
“The recently opened Cité du Vin continues the impressive redevelopment of the Garonne riverfront with a state-of-the-art wine-lovers’ experience, and the city’s gastronomic revolution keeps building on its own success.”
