San Diego hosted its annual Comic-Con geek gathering over the weekend, and with it came a host of new movie trailers for 2017’s big releases.
The highlight was undoubtedly a first glimpse at Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman which, by the look of its trailer, seems like the kind of sweeping superhero epic we haven’t seen since the original Christopher Reeve Superman in the late 70s.
Gadot’s superheroine was the clear highlight of the disappointing Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, so the character getting her own movie can only be a good thing.
It’s probably long overdue, too. Wonder Woman celebrates her 75th anniversary this year, and the Patty Jenkins-directed comic book adventure will be the first big outing for the character.
There was, of course, the Lynda Carter TV series, but that was 40 years ago.
Alongside the Wonder Woman promo was a teaser for Zack Snyder’s Justice League movie, which sees Ben Affleck Batman and Gadot’s Wonder Woman assembling a team of superheroes – including Aquaman and The Flash – to fend off an unknown enemy.
If Batman v Superman was a largely humourless affair, then this – gasp! – contains actual jokes.
Could this be redemption for Batfleck?
We’ll find out when Justice League hits cinemas in November 2017. Wonder Woman will arrive beforehand in June 2017.
