Scarlett Johansson has been a big part of the Avengers movies for the last five years, Black Widow is one of the series’ most interesting characters, and she’s the highest grossing actress of all time. So… why the hell hasn’t she been given her own solo movie yet?
Chris Evans recently gave an interview with Elle magazine, and pretty much summed up our feelings about the whole thing.
When asked why there hadn’t been a Black Widow movie ordered by Marvel yet, Evans replied: “That’s a good question. It would really just clean up, wouldn’t it? Scarlett [Johansson] is so good at everything she does.”
Here at loaded, we really think Marvel are missing a trick by not ordering a Scarlett solo movie already. In fact, we think they’ve let DC get the upper hand on this one.
Hear us out – recent DC movies have been kind of a mess… In fact, Marvel has been head and shoulders above DC in all departments. Except one: DC was the first of the two studios to announce a female-fronted solo superhero movie.
After coming dangerously close to saving the frankly terrible Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice last year, Gal Gadot is preparing to kick ass in the upcoming Wonder Woman movie, and the trailers look promising.
The lack of female-fronted movies over at Marvel is getting more and more noticeable, but the strange thing is, to loaded at least, is that Marvel are clearly open to the idea of female-fronted movies.
They did just announce an all-female Spider-Man movie focused on Silver Sable and Black Cat – so why hasn’t a Black Widow movie been ordered yet.
Johansson’s Black Widow has been with us since, and she’s one of the most popular characters in the Avengers. So why do Silver Sable and Black Cat – two relatively minor Marvel characters – get their own movie and Black Widow doesn’t?
It seems such an obvious choice to us, and it seems like a Black Widow movie would be a no-brainer for Marvel. After all, the disappointing Ghost In The Shell aside, Johansson has been a very solid performer at the box office, so the percentages game suggests that the film would make a pretty solid return.
Johansson herself has said herself she is open to the idea, so a Black Widow movie must only be a matter of time… right?
Make it happen Marvel.
