Twin Peaks is BACK very soon, and fans are incredibly excited to see David Lynch’s cult creation return to our screens.
However, while hopes are high for the upcoming reboot, there’ll be something missing this time around…
As fan will remember, actress Lara Flynn Boyle made a big impression in her role as Donna Hayward – the best friend of murdered school student Laura Palmer – in the original 1990 series.
But for all the familiar faces returning to the new series, Lara won’t be making a reappearance.
The likes of Kyle MacLachlan, Mädchen Amick and Sheryl Lee will all be reprising their roles, but Lara Flynn sadly won’t be, and that’s a damn shame.
Back in the mid 80s, years before her breakthrough role, Lara had already starred in another cult hit. Lara had a small role in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off back in 1986. Sadly though, her scenes got cut from the final version of the film.
However, it allowed her to earn her Screen Actors Guild card, which lead to her earning other roles, like Poltergeist III in 1988.
Fast forward a few years and Lara is a star thanks to her performance as Donna Hayward. However, after that initial success, Lara made the surprising decision to turn down a chance to return to the part after the end of the second series.
Her choice meant The West Wing actress Moira Kelly played the character in Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me and Twin Peaks: The Missing Pieces.
After leaving the show, she went on to make the critically acclaimed Red Rock West with Dennis Hopper and Nicolas Cage in 1993, before making the critically lambasted Home Alone rip-off Baby’s Day Out in 1994.
As well as her movie roles, she was also known at the time for having a high-profile relationship with Jack Nicholson. In fact, David Spade claims that Nicholson ‘stole’ Lara from her, and the trio were allegedly engaged in a pretty heated love triangle at some stage in the late 90s.
Later, Lara had turns in Wayne’s World in 1997 and Men In Black II, where she played sinister shapeshifter Serleena – she’s the one who eats that guy during the opening credits.
Men In Black II turned out to be the biggest of her career, and one of her biggest TV roles turned out to be legal drama The Practice, which she starred in between 1997 and 2003.
With all the buzz surrounding Twin Peaks’s return, it got loaded thinking – what’s Lara Flynn Boyle been up to recently?
In recent years, she’s made a move away from Hollywood and gained a reputation for being a very private person. Her last screen appearance came in 2014’s family comedy Lucky Dog, and it looks as Lara has retired from the industry at the age of 47.
Of course, it would be great to see her return to the role of Donna Hayward, but it looks like fans will never get the opportunity to see her back in character.
She won’t be returning to star in the new series of Twin Peaks in 2017, but Lara will always be fondly remembered by fans for her damn fine performance in the original series.
