A riot broke out at Bedford Prison on Sunday night (November 6), after inmates stormed the facility armed with knives.

Prison officers from all over the country were called to the facility at around 5pm yesterday, after over 200 prisoners took over two wings.

The situation was resolved following a six-hour operation conducted by riot police. No officers were hurt, but two prisoners were treated for injuries.

As the Prison Officers Association (POA) reports, inmates broke out of their cells before seizing keys and starting fires.

Mobile phone footage filmed inside Bedford prison was posted on social media last night.

A Prison Service spokesman said: “Specially trained prison officers and staff from the emergency services have successfully resolved an incident involving a number of prisoners at HMP Bedford.

“An investigation into this incident will take place. We are absolutely clear that prisoners who behave in this way will be punished and could spend significantly longer behind bars.”
