Carles Puyol proved he’s lost none of his edge after reducing Phil Neville to a crumpled heap with an X-rated challenge in a six-a-side friendly tournament involving former pros.
The Star Sixes tournament at the O2 in London features a glut of big names, with Neville part of England’s team for the competition alongside the likes of Steven Gerrard, Emile Heskey, and David James.
But the main talking point after the first day of games centred on Puyol, and the thunderous, knee-high tackle he unleashed on the former Manchester United and Everton utility man.
Unbelievably, the referee in charge of the game did not blow up for a foul, arguing the Spaniard got the ball.
Thankfully Neville was not seriously injured in the challenge though he did have some words to say on the tackle, during an interview with Sky Sports after the game.
“It is the worst tackle that I have ever seen on a football field,” he said.”Honestly, it was a horrendous tackle.
“That was only two or three minutes into the game, so was a bit of an eye opener.”
The challenge was only the start of the misery for Neville and England though, who were soundly beaten 4-1 by the Spaniards and must now face a Scotland team on something of a high after beating Mexico 3-1.
