With sales totalling nearly £4 billion in the US last year alone, marijuana is fast becoming big business stateside as people look to cash in on the legal cannabis craze.
Available for medical use in 23 different states as well as in the District of Columbia and even legalised for recreational use in Alaska, Colorado, Oregon and both Washington State and Washington D.C, it seems many Americans cannot get enough of the green stuff.
All of which goes some way to explaining some of the fascinating new directions the legal marijuana industry is moving in.
If, for example, you are looking for a breakfast-based alternative to the standard ‘wake-and-bake’ smoke, then Chrontella is the product for you.
Fusing the delicious chocolate and hazelnut of Nutella with the moreish taste of marijuana, this weed-infused edible could mean big things for stoners when it comes to seeking out more appealing munchies.
Sold in 300mg jars, Chrontella could set you back as much as £15 to £20 but is most definitely more than just your average chocolate spread.
US residents will have to go the extra mile to get their hands on it though, with Chrontella currently only available from cannabis retail outlets in Canada.
If you are looking for something a little less calorific, then the Humboldt Distillery in northern California may have the answer. Known for their fine range of spiced rums and organic spirits, the distillery has just released the first Humboldt’s Finest cannabis infused vodka.
Produced as part of an initial small batch, the 80-proof vodka is made using natural, locally sourced ingredients including hemp seed – that’s cannabis sativa to all marijuana fans out there – from nearby Oregon.
Humboldt said: “We infuse vodka with a legal and locally grown hemp to achieve a spirit with a unique herbal aromatic quality. We’ve found it works well in place of gin, giving classic cocktails a fresh new spin.”
Priced at roughly £20 for a 750ml bottle, it is important to note that the THC levels in this new cannabis vodka are negligible, meaning you would need to have quite a session on the sauce if you are looking to feel even the smallest buzz.
Spirits and breakfast spread manufacturers are not the only ones looking to milk the cannabis cash cow either. As chronicled in a recent video clip for Motherboard, New York rapper Action Bronson is busy developing his own brand of cannabis concentrate.
Based in the X-Tracted Labs in Seattle, Action has been helping creating his own special flavour of “dabs” where scientists are able to isolate terpenes, the natural oils in cannabis that dictate smell and flavour, thus allowing Bronson to curate his own specific smoke.
Having sampled the results alongside friend and colleague Big Body Bes, it is fair to say that the pair were sufficiently impressed, with the finished article likely to arrive in cannabis stores in the US later this year.
Following hot on the heels of the Bernie Sanders-branded hash pipes, created to help support the Democrat presidential candidate’s campaign, we have probably not seen the last of the out-there marijuana-related products and paraphernalia in 2016. High times, indeed.
