Move over Game Of Thrones, there’s a new show in town that’s getting TV viewers hot under the collar.
The second series premiere of BBC 2’s Versailles, about Louis XIV’s rise to power in 17th century France, featured no less than seven sex scenes, full frontal nudity and one instance of an African dwarf emerging from inside the Queen’s skirt.
“Sex scenes are always awkward. Anyone that’s ever done a sex scene in our industry know that they are embarrassing.”
The show stars George Blagden of Vikings fame, Anna Brewster, Noemie Schmidt, Alexia Giordano and Sarah Winter, all of whom didn’t seem shy about getting their kit off in the name of drama.
If anything deserves the tag “period romp”, it’s Versailles.
“Sex scenes are always awkward. Anyone that’s ever done a sex scene in our industry know that they are the most embarrassing and really awkward as they’re really technical, difficult to shoot,” Blagden told AP. “I’d not done a lot of them before these series.”
Viewers were also getting slightly steamed up by the events unfolding on screen. This is only episode one, too, so expect a lot more of this in the weeks to come…
Bloody hell, 25 mins into #Versailles and we've had 2 straight and 2 gay sex scenes, murder, and a dwarf up the Queens skirt. My eyes ?

Might need to start a sex scene count for #Versailles. Can it, WILL IT surpass GoT or Outlander? :O

Pretty people, lovely buildings, random bouts of unshocking sex and violence, no plot, poor dialogue. That about sums up #Versailles so far.

Watched #Versailles last night. If BBC could digitally add name badges (except in sex scenes) it would help us follow the story.

SHOCK! TV program about serial-shagger King has sex in it! #Versailles

You know you're getting old when the wallcoverings excite you more than the sex. #Versailles
