Raunchy BBC series Versailles is coming back with a bang – specifically a gang bang.

The story of the hedonistic Sun-King and his wild court has attracted controversy during the first series for its unapologetic depiction of sex.

A newly released still from the sex-heavy show indicates that things are continuing in the same way with series two.

The image depicts the king’s brother Philippe, Duke of Orleans and his lover Chevalier de Lorraine and three others, all naked and piled on top of each other in bed.

The king himself is also seen cuddling in the nude with his mistress Madame de Montespan post coitus.

With its return, protests have arisen yet again; Norman Wells from the Family Education Trust is calling the show, ‘pornography dressed up under another name.’

It’s true that the series does have some boundary pushing sex scenes – including graphic oral sex and a dwarf orgy – but show writer and creator David Wolstencraft says: “Sex is a fact of life.”

In response to the accusations, the BBC is defending the historical drama, after offering a statement saying: ‘Versailles is an established series shown after 9pm on BBC2, and its content is nothing beyond the expectations of a post-watershed UK television,’ a spokesperson stated as reported by the Metro.

With that settled we can look forward to the second season, which sees the French nobility moving into Versailles so King Louis can watch them carefully. That’s just asking for trouble…
