After months of speculation, doubt and rumour, Top Gun fans have been given the news they’ve been hoping and praying for: Iceman is back.

Speaking to TheWrap, a closer insider working on the production confirmed Tom Cruise’s Top Gun sparring partner Val Kilmer.

Kilmer is set to return as Lieutenant Tom “Iceman” Kazansky alongside Cruise’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell for the long-awaited sequel to Tony Scott’s 1986 classic.

Though plot details remain scarce, it’s thought that the film will see Maverick return as a flight instructor, training up a new generation of pilots while struggling to adapt to changes like the introduction of drones.

Quite where the Iceman will fit into proceedings is unclear, though he has been spotted near to a San Diego hotel that is being used by the studio during production.

A rep for Paramount has so far failed to confirm his involvement though.

Kilmer first sparked rumours of his return on Facebook after writing that he was “offered ‪#‎topgun2‬ – not often you get to say ‘yes’ without reading the script…”

He later updated the post to say he had been premature in his announcement.

“This is a long way off so calm down. This has been talked about for a long long time and being offered a role is very different from doing a role. I jumped the gun with my post. I jumped the top gun… An innocent mistake. It was just such a wonderful phone call with my agent…”
