Majority of UK employers expecting staff to call in sick during Euro 2016

From migraines to car breakdowns - those excuses had best be watertight

The European Championship is almost upon us and with football fans across the UK preparing to cheer on England, Wales and Northern Ireland, it can pay to be prepared.

Full-stocked fridge full of beverages? Check. Frankie Dettori’s pitiful body weight in pizza? Done. A list of at least 10 plausible reasons for missing work the next day. Of course.

And that’s really the main thing, because it turns out employers up and down the land are bracing themselves for the biannual mass-exodus of football-loving workers.

According to research from Robert Half, based on a survey of UK bosses, 73 per cent think it is likely staff will call in sick or make some sort of excuse to get out of work the day directly after a Euro 2016 game.

But we are not alone in going hell for leather during the international football fiesta, with the survey of 1,600 HR directors also finding that 79 per cent of German respondents reckon the Die Mannschaft loving masses will be skipping work too.

In fairness, though, they have just won the World Cup and have a great chance to win the Euros, helped in no small by the fact that they don’t have human potato Wayne Rooney pulling the strings in the midfield.

It is a different story elsewhere though with just 69 per cent of French employers predicting post-match sick days.

Meanwhile, the absence of Vincent Kompany coupled with Eden Hazard’s poor form has evidently got to the Belgium fans with just 63 per cent of employers in the region predicting fans will call in sick or miss work as a result of the Euros.

Phil Sheridan, UK senior managing director at Robert Half UK, said:

“As excitement for the UEFA tournament builds, employers who plan ahead and incorporate the matches into their [organisation’s] events calendar will benefit from an increase in employee morale and job satisfaction.”

Yeah Phil, or they can just let us piss off early for the day.
