The first full trailer for Darren Aronofsky’s new horror Mother! has arrived and it looks like being Jennifer Lawrence’s most terrifying turn yet.
Touching on such classics as The Shining, Suspiria and The Wicker Man, though details remain scarce on the movie’s plot, some details to appear apparent following the release of the two-minute clip. It starts out with Lawrence living an idyllic life in a large country house alongside her partner or potentially husband, Javier Bardem.
Lawrence doesn’t seem all that happy in her new abode which, viewers are told, she has been busy decorating and attempting to breathe life into. Not everything is hunky dory though – at one point Lawrence’s character finds a small blood stain on a carpet.
Things take a turn for the strange, however, when a creepy looking Ed Harris arrives out of nowhere and apparently decides to stay the night. “He’s a stranger,” Lawrence asked Bardem. “We’re just going to let him sleep in our house?”
Things get weirder from there, with Michelle Pfeiffer next to arrive on the scene, claiming to be Harris’ wife and carrying pictures of Bardem in her suitcase.
There’s shocking imagery aplenty, from secret rooms and burning flesh to blood-filled light bulbs and it seems like Bardem may be in on some far bigger, more gruesome plan, involving Lawrence with more and more people arriving at the house. “They’ve come here to see me,” Javier Bardem says. “I’m so sorry.”
Of course, this being Aronofsky, all may not be as it seems – the film could well be playing out inside Lawrence’s damaged and distorted mind. However, given that he’s touched on that previously with Black Swan, it seems unlikely he would go back over old ground.
In any case, the violence and intrigue isn’t all that has got people talking.
Many fans have already taken to Twitter to express disdain at the noticeable age-gap between Lawrence and Bardem – with the older man, younger woman dynamic far too commonplace
in Hollywood movies for their liking.
“The scariest part of the Mother! trailer is the age difference between Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem,” one wrote. “Just one thing, Javier Bardem is 48 and Jennifer Lawrence is 26. Can we please stop doing this in movies, please? It’s so creepy and weird,” another added.
The comments continued, with another noting “This trailer looks lit but also the pairing of Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem is like, Woody Allen levels of no” while one fan added, “Javier Bardem is old enough to be Jennifer Lawrence’s grandpa.”
It’s not the first time Lawrence has had to deal with this kind of age gap, having been cast as Christian Bale’s wife in American Hustle and Bradley Cooper’s love interest in Silver Linings Playbook.
