Tom Cruise says Top Gun 2 might finally be about to happen

Ever since Top Gun flew onto cinema screens back in 1986, people have been feeling the need… for a sequel.

It’s now been 30 years and despite several instances of ‘advanced discussions’ about a potential Top Gun 2, nothing has so far materialised.

However, there might finally be some hope on the horizon.

Tom Cruise, while doing the promotions for his new film Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, stopped by the Graham Norton show this past week where he was asked by the host for an update on a potential return for Maverick and co.

“Yes, we’re discussing it. We’re discussing it. We’re trying to figure it out.”

Of course, this is by no means a confirmation that a return to Top Gun is on the way but it does at least ensure it’s a very real possibility.

The question of whether or not Cruise could even fit a new Top Gun into his schedule would be a potential stumbling block as he is notoriously one of the busiest actors in the world.

In addition to the new Jack Reacher, he’s also got the continuing Mission: Impossible franchise as well as his upcoming role in next year’s remake of The Mummy, which is due to be the first instalment in a shared Universal Monsters Cinematic Universe.

That’s a heck of a lot of franchise for one man to handle!

Naturally there’s been no word on any potential plot for a possible Top Gun 2, but we quite like the idea of Maverick now being a Top Gun instructor coaching a new generation of reckless pilots intent on writing checks their body can’t cash.

Cruise can currently be seen in Jack Reacher: Never Go Back.
