The makers of The Walking Dead are preparing to unveil something pretty special for the second half of the show’s eighth season: naked zombies. Yuck.
With ratings in decline and criticism of the show’s pacing and direction rife, showrunners are preparing to do something never before seen on the show: give fans a glimpse of a “fully nude” zombie.
Executive producer Greg Nicotero revealed the gruesome plans ahead of the show’s return.
“There’s an episode where we did our first fully nude walker,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “We’ve never done that before.”
Full frontal nudity isn’t an alien concept in US TV these days – shows like Spartacus and Game of Thrones have both featured characters flashing the flesh before.
This is a little different though, given that the flesh involved in likely to be of the rotten variety. There’s no word yet on whether the naked zombie will be male or female either or whether it will involve some full-frontal action, but fans had best prepare themselves.
It’s likely to be a gory and thoroughly unpleasant experience but, if it moves the story of the show forward, fans are unlikely to complain.
The Walking Dead has been facing something of a crisis of late.
Back in November, it was revealed that the show suffered its biggest ratings decline since its beleaguered second season.
Only 7.85 million people tuned into the episode “The Big Scary U”. That represents the lowest figure recorded since “Tell It To The Frogs” from season two, which racked up 5.07 million viewers.
The Walking Dead’s Rotten Tomatoes rating has also slipped, with both fans and critics alike expressing disappointment as a season previously billed as an “All Out War” between Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and his band of survivors and Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s villainous Negan and his own army of followers.
Introducing fully nude zombies into proceeds is unlikely to prompt a major turnaround though it could at least inject a little more shock value into the horror drama series, which has been a little too safe of late.
