2015 has been a massive year for international clotheshorses, with Forbes World’s Highest-Paid Models list featuring huge earnings for recent retiree Gisele Bündchen alongside Cara Delevingne and Adriana Lima.
But with the huge £30m hole left by Brazilian bombshell Bündchen, all’s to play for to attain similarly dizzying pay cheques.
Loaded reported earlier this month that 16 of the 21 models on Forbes’ rich list have been on the books of fashion powerhouse Victoria’s Secret. So who looks likely to join the likes of Angels Adriana Lima, Candice Swanepole and Karlie Kloss at its summit?
Lais Ribeiro didn’t decide to become a model until she was an 18-year-old mother of one studying nursing. Now 25, she’s walked the runway for Ralph Lauren, Christian Dior and Tom Ford.
Earlier this year she was signed up as a Victoria’s Secret Angel in the brand’s biggest ever group hiring, meaning the Brazilian superpower in the making is perfectly placed to take Gisele’s throne.
We know it’s another Angel, but you’d be mad to think their new models aren’t set for a massive year.
California-born Jasmine Tookes started modelling for Abercrombie & Fitch, since when French Vogue named her one of its 10 new faces from winter 2013 fashion week. Calvin Klein, Tom Ford, Prada, Miu Miu and Versace agreed, and she’s been hot property on the catwalk ever since.
Dutch stunner Romee Strijd has already had a massive career despite only being around for a short time. She’s walked the runway for Burberry, Calvin Klein, Louis Vuitton and Prada. She’s also featured in advertising campaigns for Alexander McQueen, Donna Karan, Giuseppe Zanotti, H&M and Marchesa as well as appearing on the cover of Elle and Vogue Netherlands.
The 20-year-old’s swift ascent to the summit of the fashion world looks set to continue.
Swedish beauty Elsa Hosk was a professional basketball player, but began gracing the Victoria’s Secret runway in 2011 before winning Sweden’s Next Top Model in 2012.
Her distinctive look has lead to her working with high-profile photographer Ellen von Unworth in campaigns for Guess before being signed up as a full Angel in 2015. Hosk has also worked to support anti-human-trafficking organization FAIR Girls.
North Carolina is famous for a number of things, including John Coltrane, being home to more American Idol finalists than any other US state and a recent Public Policy Poll that found support there for Donald Trump at an all-time high.
Fortunately for her home’s citizens, Hunt could close 2016 as one of the most recognisable faces in modelling after signing up as an Angel. She’s in demand for brands including Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana and Prada. Positive news alongside the state’s blues heritage.
Stella Maxwell is one of the biggest British names on the circuit. And it’s easy to see why. Born in Belgium to Northern Irish parents, her pout has dazzled runways including Marc Jacobs, Jeremy Scott and Moschino. She’s also rumoured to be dating Miley Cyrus after the pair were spotted passionately kissing in July.
Sara Sampaio became the first Portuguese model to appear in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue after modelling for brands like Calzedonia. She’s also won the Portuguese Golden Globe for Best Female Model four times despite still being only 24.
Sampaio is also a brown belt in karate and was rumoured to be dating Harry Styles after Entertainment Weekly reported seeing the model leaving a hotel he was staying at in July. Speaking to Vogue about how she finds being photographed naked empowering, she said: “At the end of the day, we were born naked, and that’s the way we are gonna go.”
Slavic stunner Kate Grigorieva was a Miss Russia contestant in 2012, and winner Elizaveta Golovanova must have been some serious competition. As well as being mind-bendingly beautiful, before taking to the runway Grigorieva was an accomplished ballroom dancer and gained a degree in Marketing.
Since then, she was runner-up on Russia’s Next Top Model. Fortunately, the fashion world has identified what a winner she is, putting her on the runway for Gucci, Roberto Cavalli and Alexander McQueen. Next year looks set to continue her trajectory, now that she too is an Angel.
British Vogue editor Miranda Almond summed up Hungarian beauty Barbara Palvin when she said: “We chose Barbara because she is absolutely exquisite looking, a cross between a young Brooke Shields and Natalia Vodianova.”
The 22-year-old is an ambassador for L’Oréal Paris and began her acting career in Hercules. Expect to be seeing much more of Palvin’s immeasurably long legs.
New York native Rachel Hilbert has one of the freshest faces in modelling and is best known for being the face of Victoria’s Secret youth brand PINK. Still only 20, she’s fronted campaigns for the likes of Urban Outfitters, Macy’s and Kohls. Big things beckon.
