There are some pretty miserable looking stars in Hollywood – Vince Vaughn, Bill Murray and Susan Sarandon spring to mind – but Jeremy Renner is right up there with the worst of them.

In case you missed it, Jeremy Renner appeared on the Graham Norton Show recently, and explained the truth behind his ‘resting bitch face’.

“It’s a resting face I was born with. You know I build a career around it, so it’s awesome,” he said on the show. Watch the clip below:

As it turns out “resting bitch face” is a very common thing, so common in fact that experts have been looking into the science behind the phenomenon [via Marie Claire].

Researchers at Noldus Information Technology have been conducting researching using an incredibly advanced Noldus FaceReader computer, and they’ve worked out why certain people’s ‘resting face’ actually look really, really pissed off.

According to them, the people who suffer with it are those with neutral expressions showing just enough contempt for people to notice, but not enough to be really obviously apparent.

It’s this this unintentional ‘pissed off’ look that makes other people think they’re annoyed the who time, when really they aren’t.

The research also found that it occurs just as much in men and it does in women.

“[It] isn’t something that occurs more in women but we’re more attuned to notice it because women have more pressure on them to be happy and smiley and to get along with others,” researcher Abbe Macbeth said.

So there, you have it – next time you see Jeremy Renner looking angry on a red carpet, you’ll know the reason why.
