On reflection, 2016 has been a pretty god-awful year. First, we lost David Bowie, then Brexit and now Donald Trump

It’s not been the best 12 months all told, but at least we had some pretty cool viral trends to keep us occupied in-between all the bad stuff.

Just when we needed a distraction, the internet served up some of the best hastags and social media movements in recent memory. The Mannequin challenge threatened to take over the web for a while, but it was the more NSFW trends that really made things interesting.

From #belfies to the #onefingerchallenge, these are the most NSFW social trends of the year.

#freethenipple

The #freethenipple trend has been around for some time now, but it enjoyed a huge rise in popularity over the course of 2016. Stars such as Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner were prominent voices in the online movement, which looks to reduce the taboo surrounding female nudity. Millions of women shared images online using the hashtag, and the world was a more liberated place as a result.

Could you take a picture of yourself naked, with only your index finger to cover your modesty? That’s what thousands of people have been attempting online recently, in what must go down as the quirkiest hashtag of the year.

#thighgap

The #thighgap trend gathered momentum in 2016, and saw thousands of Instagram users post images of their figures online. It’s proven controversial though, due to the negative health implications. With so many curve models coming to prominence this year, the #thighgap trend looks like it’ll be on the way out in 2017.

Kim Kardashian might have started the trend a few years back, but Jennifer Lopez, Nicki Minaj and Beyonce have helped craft the art of the #belfie in 2016. The trio have helped to launch the era of the booty and redefine body image in Hollywood over the past 12 months. Thousands of women have been recreating the look on social media ever since.
