Ten Most Bizarre Facts About Nicolas Cage

From Raising Arizona to Face/Off, Nicolas Cage's life is way more interesting than his films.

Nicolas Cage, that man who, for every good movie he makes, seems to spawn fifteen bad ones.

He gives us The Rock and then he gives us Captain Corelli’s Mandolin. Or we get the vibrant Lord of War and soon afterwards, er… Ghost Rider. Or Bangkok Dangerous. Or The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. You get the gist.

But as talented as Cage is (and he is, if you ignore the bad movies), he is also somewhat eccentric in real life, as most Hollywood stars are. So here are some weird facts you may not know about the man:

1

He is part of Hollywood’s “Famiglia”

This is actually a well-known fact about Cage, but it’s quite surprising that he decided to hide his birth name, Nicolas Coppola, to succeed in Hollywood without having to live in the shadow of his uncle, Francis Ford Coppola, or his grandfather, Carmine Coppola. Not that it mattered, though – you put him next to all the Coppolas and it’s like they were all cast in the same mould.

2

He got his stage name from a superhero

When it came down to deciding what surname would replace Coppola, young Nicolas turned to one of his favourite pastimes: comic books. In particular, to Marvel’s Luke Cage (which is now a Netflix series), one of his favourite characters and, as Nicolas wrongfully thought back then, the first black superhero –Black Panther and Falcon came before, but we forgive Nicolas for his good intentions.

3

He proposed to Patricia Arquette the day they met

Needless to say, Arquette (herself from another famous Hollywood family) found the proposal a bit creepy, but played along and gave Cage a list of things he’d have to do if he wanted to marry her. Because this is Nicolas Cage we are talking about, he started doing everything on the list, which made Patricia realise that it was time to start avoiding him. Luckily for Nicolas, they reunited a decade later and eventually married. Of course, they divorced, but that is the usual with Hollywood marriages.

4

He is into lizards (we guess)

If he isn’t, at least he likes them a lot, because he has a tattoo of a lizard wearing a top hat on his upper back. He also has one on his biceps of Ghost Rider, because apparently Cage wants to remember that he made that film –and a sequel. Yes, that happened.

5

He once ate a real cockroach

We can’t deny that, despite the quality of the movies he makes, he is a committed actor. For the 1989 film Vampire’s Kiss, Cage decided to go for it and actually eat a cockroach. As he stated later, “every muscle in my body didn’t want to do it, but I did it anyway.” Because that’s how Nicolas Cage rolls.

6

His son is also a superhero

What else would you expect from the man who named himself after a Marvel character? He had his second son in 2005 with his third wife, Alice Kim Cage, and the baby was called something out of this planet. From Krypton, to be precise, as Cage named his son Kal-el, the birth name of DC’s Superman -Cage almost played the hero in Tim Burton’s failed attempt Superman Lives. Don’t be surprised if he has another son and calls him Thor Stark.

7

He is a massive Elvis Presley fan

This wouldn’t be so weird weren’t for the fact that he took his fanaticism so far that he ended up marrying the King’s daughter in 2002. The marriage lasted only two years, and the moral of the story would be this: never marry a man who is obsessed with your father.

8

A bounty hunter bailed him out of jail

Cage has recently separated from his third wife, Alice. But a few years ago, the actor was arrested in New Orleans for domestic violence. As it was obvious that his wife wasn’t going to pay the $11,000 needed to bail Cage out of jail, Duane Chapman, who is best known for his TV show Dog The Bounty Hunter, paid the sum. He must have been a big fan of the actor.

9

He keeps his cool during breaking and entering situations

As you would expect Cage to behave. A few years ago, Nicolas woke up in the middle of the night in his house in Orange County, California, and found a man in his room eating a Fudgesicle. Not exactly something you see every day, but Cage pitied the man and decided not to press charges.

10

He owns a haunted house

But not just a haunted house. The Most Haunted House in America, as most people call it. Cage bought the LaLaurie Mansion in New Orleans in 2007, a house in which Delphine LaLaurie tortured and murdered many of her household slaves in the 19th century. Charming place to spend the night in. Only Nicolas Cage would consider purchasing it.
