They may have had one of their songs covered by Rihanna, but BRITs winners Tame Impala are still too nervous to actually talk to the singer.

Tame Impala saw their song New Person Same Old Mistakes covered by Rihanna for her new album Anti, where it’s been re-titled as Same Ol’ Mistakes.

After winning Best International Band at the BRITs, the Australian trio’s singer Kevin Parker said in our video press conference which can be seen above: “We haven’t said hello to Rihanna here tonight. She’s quite rude in that regard.”

Emphasising that Parker was joking, guitarist Cam Avery added: “Even though she sung our song, it’d take a lot of balls to just go straight up to Rihanna and congratulate her.”

Parker added: “Yeah, it’s not like walking up to us.”

The band appeared delighted with their BRIT trophy, though Parker admitted it still felt early to be getting such an accolade. “The BRITs has been pretty intense,” said Parker. “It’s definitely the most extravagant ceremony we’ve been to.

“That’s not saying much, because we haven’t been to that many around the world, but it’s undeniably the most fancy one.”

Since releasing their album Current last year, Tame Impala have recently completed their first British arena tour. Parker said: “The UK is the first place we came to to play live overseas. It’s always been special to us.”

The band have a string of European festivals announced for the summer, starting with Primavera in Spain. But they have yet to confirm any extra shows in the UK, with Forbidden Fruit in Ireland on June 4 the closest they have so far.

The lack of British festival shows has led to speculation they could be playing Glastonbury or Latitude, both of which have yet to reveal their line-up. Latitude announces its line-up next Thursday.
