WWE Attitude Era legend ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin has lifted the lid on the work that went into ensuring he was able to enjoy an ice cold can of beer in the ring during his days on Smackdown and Monday Night Raw.

Austin was well known for his beer drinking post-match celebration back in the day, but what some fans probably didn’t realise was the amount of work that went into ensuring he could sink a cold one – and the number of times he ended up feeling a little tipsy.

The Texas Rattlesnake revealed all during a chat with former WWE referee and timekeeper Mark Yeaton on The Steve Austin Show Podcast.

It was Yeaton’s job to bring cases of cold beer to the ring and have them on hand to toss in Austin’s direction whenever Stone Cold called for it.

What many may not have realised, however, was that Austin often left the ring feeling a little tipsy and, on a few rare occasions, just plain pissed:

“I can’t tell you how many times I left the ring and I had a little bit of a buzz because of all the beers I was drinking. When you’re shotgunning anywhere from six to 12 beers, and maybe you get half of ‘em in.”

Stone Cold definitely doesn’t adhere to the old drinking rule that eating is cheating either.

“On an empty stomach, after you’ve wrestled, it goes to your head pretty quick.”

Austin also recalled one particular beer bash alongside the Dudley Boys and Stacy Keibler, during an appearance in Japan, that got completely out of hand:

“We went through 115 beers that night [in Japan], and that was the most I ever went through.”

And Stone Cold was no faker either when it came to boozing in the ring:

“…a lot of people said ‘hey man, was that real beer?’ And I say yes, it was always real beer… except for the one time.”

Stone Cold was also rather partial to a beer-based prank too, as fellow WWE star and wrestling legend Bill Goldberg unfortunately found out during a couple of post-match appearances in the ring together:

“I go out there and I keep tossing Bill beers, and this is back when Bill didn’t really drink beer. He had to drink ‘em to keep up his gimmick because Stone Cold throwing ‘em to him. And I’d always keep shoveling him beers to get him buzzed, basically it was a rib.”

Austin sounds like he would be an absolute legend to have around on a night out.
