Time can be a cruel mistress, especially for anyone involved in the world of pop music.
In the blink of an eye, those fresh-faced boys and girls we all fell in love with as teens turn into world-weary adults with real-life problems.
For an unfortunate few, the years following a successful career in the world of pop are spent chasing those fading dreams, hoping to rekindle that special magic that once made them hot property.
East 17, S Club 7, 5ive, Eternal…the list could go on forever, but there are some exceptions. Take That, for instance, have managed to endure with the boys somehow looking even better with age – it’s all that stubble.
They aren’t the sole survivors in the world of pop when it comes to remaining in pristine condition. Faye Tozer, one fifth of pop cheesemongers Steps, is another.
Now 41, the Northampton-born singer continues to defy the ageing process to pretty much exactly the same as she was back when she was strutting her stuff alongside Lee ‘H’ Hawkins, Lisa Scott-Lee, Claire Richards and Lee Latchford-Evans.
Tozer has kept a largely low profile since Steps split in late December 2001, returning to the charts just once, a year later, when she duetted with Russell Watson on the Proms-tinged single “Someone Like You” which reached no.10 in the charts.
She followed that up with regular appearances alongside Watson on his UK wide tour, earning rave reviews for her performance alongside the world-renowned male vocalist.
Now married for a second time and with one child, the secret behind Tozer’s youthful appearance appears to lie in a busy schedule of fitness work and regular theatre appearances.
Having sold 25 million records, including an astonishing 15 million albums worldwide, it’s difficult to disagree with the assertion that Steps were a pop phenomenon.
And with it now close to five years since the group embarked on a reunion tour, Tozer could be back in the limelight again very soon.
All together now “Tragedy…”
