Stephen Merchant will host The Crystal Maze when the show returns for a one-off special on Channel 4 later this year.
The game show is making a comeback of sorts as part of the broadcaster’s Stand Up To Cancer charity week of programming this October.
Merchant said: “As a huge fan of the original series, I’m honoured to support Stand Up To Cancer by hosting this one-off edition of The Crystal Maze.
“Richard O’Brien and Ed Tudor-Pole leave big shoes to fill, but I have size 14 feet, so I’ll do my best.”
The new special is being filmed at the Crystal Maze Liver Experience in London, which is already open to the public, offering fans the chance to try out the show for themselves.
Reports had suggested former Doctor Who star David Tennant would step into the role of host but Merchant has now been confirmed for the one-off show which will see a team of celebrities tasked with solving puzzles in the Aztec, Ocean, Futuristic and Medieval Zones.
“We wanted something extra special for the Stand Up To Cancer campaign this year, so we’re delighted that Crystal Maze will be returning for a celebrity one-off,” Ed Havard, Channel 4’s Head of TV Events explained.
The Crystal Maze first aired back in February 1990, running for six series with the last show broadcast on August 10 1995.
