Han Solo may be the intended focus of Solo: A Star Wars Story, the first standalone movie in the Star Wars universe, but right now all anyone is talking about is Chewbacca.
The Wookie is dominating much of the online chatter surrounding Ron Howard’s long-delayed film, following the release of a first full-length trailer for the movie. Starring Alden Ehrenreich as a young Han Solo, the film focuses on the story of how Solo became one of the most notorious smugglers in the galaxy and a fine pilot to boot.
Due to debut this May, the film looks on course to deliver a visually-enthralling sci-fi Star Wars nostalgia fest, with the Emilia Clark, Donald Glover and Woody Harrelson all making appearances in the trailer.
There are glimpses of Solo’s first meeting with Lando Calrissian (Glover) while fans have been given a clear idea of what to expect from Harrelson’s character, Tobias Beckett, who is set to serve as Solo’s criminal mentor turned potential adversary.
Solo’s first meeting with Calrissian is perfectly teased, the pair meeting in a lavish looking space casino. “I heard a story about you once, I wonder if it’s true,” Solo quips. “Everything … you’ve heard about me … is true,” Lando fires back. Elsewhere, Harrelson’s Beckett is on hand to offer a warning to Solo.
“If you come with us, you’re in this life for good,” he says. “assume everyone will betray you.” Uh oh. That sounds lot like foreshadowing to us. Mind you, it would appear the film already has at least one big bad in the form of Paul Bettany’s crime lord Dryden Vos.
Yet the biggest revelations are reserved for Chewbacca, who is shown kissing a Wookie partner at one point and then is later revealed to be 190-years-old. And this is back before the events of the first film. He must be ancient by now.
Fans have, perhaps understandably, been all over Twitter talking about the Chewie developments.

Chewbacca got blonde streaks and is out there breaking Lady Wookie hearts in his younger days like a 90s boy band frontman. pic.twitter.com/DxPrdqL7hc

Throw in TIE fighters, the Millennium Falcon and a possible sighting of the icy planet of Hoth and it’s not difficult to see why fans are getting excited.
All of the action, meanwhile, is underscored by Clarke’s character Qi’Ra, grilling Solo over his intentions. “You’re after something: Is it revenge? Money? Or is it something else?” she asks.
Fans will find out when Solo: A Star Wars Story lands on May 25.
