Move over Taylor Swift and Kim Kardashian, there’s a new social media queen in town.

Selena Gomez is officially the most followed celebrity on Instagram after surging past a colossal 69.5 million followers.

The popstar and actress now has the social network’s most popular account full stop. Her blend of red carpet photos, throwback pics, images of her hanging out with “the squad” and personal videos of her munching through a McDonald’s Happy Meal have clearly struck a chord with fans.

Tellingly, Gomez keeps her Insta-updates infrequent for maximum impact and doesn’t overdo it when it comes to promoting her latest films or music releases.

The five biggest accounts on Instagram are…

  • Selena Gomez – 69.5 million followers
  • Taylor Swift – 69.2 million
  • Kim Kardashian West – 63.7 million
  • Beyonce – 63 million
  • Justin Bieber – 61.6 million

Gomez overtaking Swift is hardly likely to ignite any kind of pop feud – the pair are good pals and even went as each other’s dates to the Grammys last month.

Could a team up between the pair potentially be in the works?

“The opportunity has always been there and I think she is one of the most talented songwriters I have ever met,” Gomez said. “I don’t know – I would want it to be a moment but we’ll see.”

Speaking on Capital FM, Gomez said that she was the only member of Swift’s squad who’s single.

Asked if the squad ever held auditions for new members, she replied: “Maybe not for the squad necessarily but boyfriend material is always good… none of them are single just so you know.

“Taylor is not single, Gigi is not single, neither is Kendall. I am the only single one.”

Gomez’s most recent album Revival debuted last October and later this year she’ll be seen in comedy sequel Neighbours 2: Sorority Rising.
