A 42-year-old Hong Kong man has built a robot that looks creepily like Scarlett Johansson.
Product designer Ricky Ma spent 18 months and £34,000 to assemble a female robot dubbed Mark 1.
She’s modelled after a Hollywood star whose name Ma is insisting he’ll keep under wraps, but let’s all just say her name rhymes with Charlotte Bomansson and get on with it.
Ma revealed to Reuters that he was inspired by a childhood growing up watching cartoons featuring robot heroes and has held a lifelong dream to create his own android.
No doubt a shedload of Marvel movies in the past decade featuring a certain A-lister in a skin-tight leather suit helped seal the deal, too.
“I figured I should just do it when the timing is right and realise my dream. If I realise my dream, I will have no regrets in life,” Ma said.
The Scarlett Johansson Mark 1 robot is made from a 3D-printed skeleton beneath a silicon skin that protects its electronic parts. Around 70% of the body was created using 3D printers.
“During this process, a lot of people would say things like ‘Are you stupid? This takes a lot of money. Do you even know how to do it? It’s really hard,'” explained Ma, who had to master tech skills he had zero knowledge of to complete the robot.
“When you look at everything together, it was really difficult.”
Ma’s creation isn’t completely autonomous, but she can offer up basic responses. Call Mark 1 beautiful and she’ll offer up a coquettish chuckle and say “Thank you”.
Ma is hoping to recruit investors to buy his prototype and fund the creation of more robots. We, for one, would welcome our new robot overlords…
