Annabelle: Creation, the latest addition to The Conjuring’s ever-expanding horror movie universe, is fast shaping up to be 2017’s answer to The Exorcist if the latest trailer is anything to go by.
The film, which is being helmed by Lights Out director David F. Sandberg, and produced by horror franchise aficionado James Wan, is due for release in August but is already generating a positive buzz after its premiere at the LA Film festival.
A prequel to the movie of the same name, which focused on a haunted doll, this film focuses on the couple that first brought Annabelle to life.
Set several years after the death of their young daughter, it tells the story of how this couple, with the husband working as a doll maker, welcome a nun and several young girls from a recently closed orphanage into their home.
Once inside, however, they soon become targets for Annabelle, with a series of terrifying scenarios played out in the trailer and plenty more likely to come in the finished film.
Boasting a cast that includes Spectre and Narcos actress Stephanie Sigman along with Anthony LaPaglia the film is the fourth chapter in the ever-expanding Conjuring movie universe and, much like the recent Oujia prequel, could provide scares aplenty.
Sandberg comes into the film off the back of the success of Lights Out, which was a box office smash and garnered critical acclaim.
After something of a drought for scare fans at the box office, this has all the markings of a movie to rival the likes of The Exorcist for fear-inducing set pieces. It’s probably best you don’t watch the trailer alone, for starters.
Annabelle: Creation arrives on 11 August.
