Sarah McDaniel is dragging Playboy kicking and screaming into the 21st century.

The 20-year-old model is the magazine’s first non-nude cover star – and its new redesign is done in the style of a Snapchat post.

The March issue takes the iconic publication in a strictly safe-for-work direction, bringing to an end Playboy’s 63-year history for publishing naked photos.

“A year and a half ago, we relaunched Playboy.com as a safe-for-work site,” said Playboy’s chief content officer Cory Jones. “The average age of our visitors dropped from 47 to 30. It showed how the brand can still resonate.”

But what of their latest all-new modern cover star? Here are five essential facts to get you up to speed on Sarah McDaniel.

1

She’s a social media superstar

Traditionally models have hit it big on the catwalk, but McDaniel has shot to prominence in a very modern way: social media. You can find her on Instagram as krotchy (286,000 followers) and on Facebook as voxtrott (38,000 followers). Her Twitter account – goolemturp – hasn’t seen any action since December last year, though. She still has nearly 3,500 followers on Twitter.

2

Those striking eyes are the real deal

McDaniel says her different coloured eyes – blue left, hazel right – are unassisted by contact lenses and completely natural. She suffers from heterochromia iridum, a genetic abnormality that effects six out of 1,000 people. Other famous faces with it? Mila Kunis, Kate Bosworth and Henry Cavill. David Bowie had different coloured eyes too, but his were the result of a childhood injury.

3

She went viral last year

Last October, McDaniel found herself thrown into the spotlight when websites first latched onto her distinctive eyes. Dubbed the “imperfect”, photographer Gregorio Campos praised her distinctive looks. “Anyone that looks unique, I don’t Photoshop and I think imperfections are beautiful,” he said. “I like making imperfections look good, whether it’s the atmosphere or the model.”

4

She’s working on her own bikini range

“If I developed some bikinis would you guys be interested? Ladies, message me,” McDaniel wrote on her Twitter account. Later, she fired out some images of herself posing in a range for Frankies Bikinis.

5

She’s a geek at heart

McDaniel’s Instagram shows off a few of her geekier tastes. A shot of her wearing a David Hasselhoff t-shirt shows an appreciation for 80s cheese, while her musings on fantasy role-playing game Skyrim suggests she might be joining you on multiplayer co-op mode unawares.
