You wait for one Ricky Gervais movie then two come along at once.
Not content with bringing back David Brent in Life On The Road, Britain’s biggest comedy star is releasing a second film in 2016 called Special Correspondents – the latest trailer of which is viewable above.
A remake of the 2009 French film (Envoyés très spéciaux, if you want the authentic original title), Special Correspondents is written, directed by and stars Gervais and is the latest original offering from Netflix.
Gervais and Eric Bana play a pair of radio journalists who fake front line war reports from a hideout above a Spanish restaurant in Queens, New York. When their lie spins out of control and they fake their own kidnapping, they’re forced to head into the war zone for real. Cue Gervais going full Liam Neeson and wielding a gun in a set of explosive action set pieces.
One intriguing aside: Gervais’ character is called Albert Finch, which begs the question is he somehow related to Ralph Ineson’s Finchy from The Office? Should we take this film as one part of a connected Gervaisverse?
“I think Netflix will see the return of the auteur to movie making.”
The cast? What a cast. Special Correspondents counts Vera Farmiga (Bates Motel), Kelly Macdonald (Boardwalk Empire), Kevin Pollak (The Usual Suspects), America Ferrera (Ugly Betty), Raúl Castillo (Looking, Cold Weather) and Benjamin Bratt (Modern Family) in its star-studded line-up.
Gervais made it known just how excited he is to be in business with Netflix, praising the company for giving him creative freedom over the comedy.
“I think Netflix will see the return of the auteur to movie making. Zero interference and a guaranteed audience. Perfect.”
Bana, who started out as a stand up comic before moving into serious roles, added that Gervais was “by far one of the most collaborative people I’ve worked with”
“He did an amazing job of making me forget he was the director, and it just felt like mucking around with a mate all day,” he said.
Special Correspondents will premiere on April 29, 2016 exclusively to Netflix members worldwide.
