Richard O’Brien, who presented The Crystal Maze during the show’s first four seasons during the early 90s, will be making an appearance when the show return to television this autumn.
It’s set to return to TV initially as a one-off and will form part of Chanel 4’s Stand Up to Cancer night. Stephen Merchant will present the show.
Digital Spy reports that O’Brien will be appearing via a recorded video message where he will be instructing Merchant not to muck up hosting duties.
The show will feature celebrities Rio Ferdinand, Josh Widdicombe, Michelle Keegan, Sara Cox and Jonnie Peacock taking on the maze’s challenges.
It has been speculated that David Tennant would be taking on the hosting gig before it was revealed that Merchant would be in charge.
“As a huge fan of the original series, I’m honoured to support Stand Up To Cancer by hosting this one-off edition of The Crystal Maze,” Merchant said last month.
“Richard O’Brien and Ed Tudor-Pole leave big shoes to fill, but I have size 14 feet, so I’ll do my best.”
An interactive Crystal Maze experience opened up in London last year after a successful crowdfunding campaign. The experience has been very popular, with groups of people having to book many months in advance.
