Why the Queen couldn’t sit on Game of Thrones’ Iron Throne

Everyday's a school day...

Tempting The Queen gives the Iron Throne the eye.

Here’s an interesting bit of trivia that might have passed you by, Game of Thrones fans.

Remember when Queen Elizabeth II visited the show’s set in Northern Ireland back in 2014? Everyone who saw the footage was pleading, begging for HRH to sit on it, thus creating the greatest photograph of all time.

The Queen was definitely giving the Throne the eye as she and Prince Philip toured the set accompanied by cast members Lena Headey, Kit Harrington, Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams.

But alas, her old-fashioned sense of duty and ‘playing by the rules’ meant that she wasn’t able to execute a break-the-internet photo.

Game of Thrones showrunner David Benioff explained all on Late Night With Seth Meyers, saying:

“Apparently, the Queen of England is not allowed to sit on a foreign throne. This is an esoteric rule we didn’t know about until that moment.”

It’s probably for the best. Cersei would be having none of it…
