In an unprecedented move, Prince Harry has issued a statement confirming his relationship with American actress Meghan Markle – and taken aim at the press for their treatment of the Suits star.
Releasing the notice through Kensington Palace on social media, the Prince said the recent attention thrown in Markle’s direction represented “a line crossed” by the media.
In an extraordinary – and damning – 400 word statement, the Prince also hit out at “sexism and racism” of online trolls and commenters.
“His girlfriend, Meghan Markle, has been subject to a wave of abuse and harassment. Some of this has been very public – the smear on the front of national newspaper; the racial undertones of comment pieces; and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments,” the statement said.
Prince Harry is also said to be concerned about Markle’s safety and doesn’t believe the sentiments that is “the price she has to pay” and “all part of the game” are valid arguments.
“This is not a game – it is her life and his,” the statement continued. “He has asked for this statement to be issued in the hopes that those in the press who have been driving this story can pause and reflect before any further damage is done.
“He knows that it is unusual to issue a statement like this, but hopes that fair-minded people will understand why he has felt it necessary to speak publicly.”
