Prince appears eager to shed any memory of his ‘Symbol’ era and marriage to Mayte Garcia, if the listings for his latest online auction are anything to go by.
Back in 1993, the pressure and demand from record companies to record fewer albums over an extended period of time proved to much for Prince, who opted to ditch his aforementioned name in favour of something else – a symbol.
Having made the transition back to being the artist formerly known as Prince in the years since, a new auction set for Nate Sanders boasts a wide array of stage outfits from the same mid-to-late 90s period.
A turquoise three-piece outfit that was once popular during the Symbol phase boasts a starting price of $30,000 with most stage outfit starting at anywhere between $20,000 and $30,000.
However, the most eye-catching lot in the Prince collection comes with the 50-piece china set from Prince’s Wedding to Garcia.
With every item adorned with the musician’s famous Love Symbol the set has a starting price of $50,000 but could easily fetch double that amount.
Prince evidently seems keen to erase any material items from his three-year marriage to Garcia with his diamond engagement ring and personal handwritten proposal also up for sale at a starting price of $100,000.
A dancer, actress and singer when she first met Prince, the pair married on Valentine’s Day 1996 with Garcia just 22 at the time (Prince was 37).
Once the subject of UK number one hit The Most Beautiful Girl In The World, the pair formally divorced in June 2000 with the loss of two separate children during early infancy cited as one cause for the breakdown of their marriage.
Speaking to The Mirror last year about her past with Prince, Garcia said: “I think I’m now screwed for life because my first relationship was the most bizarre relationship ever and I’m not normal any more. I’ve kind-of been spoiled and I guess I am kind-of screwed-up now.”
Though several items from their time together appear to take up the main focus of the auction, there are several other notable lots that could prove popular with fans.
These include a pair of rhinestone-encrusted handcuffs, used during his live performance of The Most Beautiful Girl in the World, which are on the block starting at $10,000.
Although slightly damaged, the handcuffs do come complete with the required key and represent one of the bargain buys of what is shaping up to be a highly lucrative sale for the iconic singer songwriter.
