Pierce Brosnan has emerged as a shock contender to play the part of Cable in the upcoming comic book movie sequel Deadpool 2.
Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds sparked the speculation after posting a picture of himself alongside the James Bond actor and fellow Marvel favourite Hugh Jackman on Instagram.
Jackman too, got in on the act with a picture of the trio together that has fans speculating as to what the next Wade Wilson adventure will look like.
The inclusion of Cable in the next Deadpool movie is no big secret – Reynolds’ titular character hints at it in the first film’s post-credits scene – but the identity of the actor who will take on the role has been the subject of intense speculation.
Former Hellboy star Ron Perlman has lobbied hard to get the part, posting a series of side-by-side shots on Instagram to highlight the striking similarities between the actor and comic book character.
Avatar and Don’t Breathe actor Stephen Laing has also been mentioned in connection with the character while Manchester-By-The-Sea’s very own Kyle Chandler emerged as a surprise candidate a couple of months ago.
Brosnan would be a solid choice for the role though and could bring something very different to the part, having previously shied away from comic book adaptations.
Something of an all-action soldier type with telepathic and telekinetic capababilities, Cable comes from the future and has been largely overlooked in the X-Men movie universe to date, despite the fact he’s the future son of Cyclops and Jean Grey’s clone (don’t ask).
Scheduled for release at some point next year, if Brosnan does get on board then Deadpool 2 could be another sequel to buck the trend for lessening returns.
