Bullet time, Kung-fu, that Propellerheads soundtrack, the Lawrence Fisburne / Keanu Reeves’ bromance and guns. Lots and lots of guns.
Those are just a few of the things that helped make The Matrix the coolest movie of the 1990s. But one cool aspect of the movie that often gets overlooked is that mobile phone.
You know the one – Reeves’ Neo is handed in by Fishburne’s Morpheus and watches it stretch out in his hand.
Technically a Nokia 3310, the handset was dubbed the “banana phone” by some but, for most, it is and always will be the Matrix phone.
Though the Matrix phone wasn’t a huge seller, thanks to a lack of availability and the fact it was a bit rubbish, that hasn’t prevented Nokia from announcing plans to re-release the handset.
The new 8110 4G Matrix phone boasts a 2.4-inch display and a 2-megapixel camera. Oh, and Snake comes as standard.
It’s all thanks to HMD Global who took over Nokia and are bringing back a glut of classic handsets for the modern mobile phone user.
The ever-reliable Nokia 3310 had already been brought back to life while there’s even more to come. The new Nokia 8110 comes with 4G, meaning you’ll be able to use apps like Facebook, Twitter and Google Maps.
This version of the Matrix phone is being willed as one for the “weekend” giving users a “chance to switch off, have fun and relax in the knowledge that all your smartphone essentials are there when you need them”.
“The Nokia 8110 comes with the craftsmanship you expect from a Nokia phone, delivering durability and reliability as standard,” HMD say.
“With a familiar and easy to use interface, it features intuitive tactile mechanics, with slide to answer and end calls, as well as an addictive helicopter style spin on its axis.”
Available in either yellow (for banana phone users) and black (for Matrix fans) the new handset is set to arrive in May, costing £69.
