Nicole Scherzinger and Cheryl had a bizarre first meeting

The duo probably won't be exchanging birthday cards this week.

Nicole Scherzinger and Cheryl Cole
Scherzy v Cheryl The X Factor stars had the weirdest first meeting.

It’s a good week to be Nicole Scherzinger or Cheryl Fernandez-Versini.

The popstars will both be celebrating birthdays this week – Nicole is 38 today and Cheryl turns 33 tomorrow, but it’s fair to say the pair of them won’t be exchanging birthday cards.

That’s because the duo’s first encounter was so excruciatingly awkward it seemingly left Cheryl with permanent emotional scarring.

Cheryl recounted the yarn in her book My Story, writing: “The first time I met Nicole was when she was performing on The X Factor in London.

“‘Oh my God, Cheryl! You’re just as pretty in real life! I heard your song on the radio!’ she had gushed. It was really embarrassing.

“Then she started singing Promise This to me, and I swear to God the woman sang the whole song, to my face. It was just so awkward, and every time I stood next to her she started singing it again.

“I thought how that would be like me going up to Britney and singing the whole of ‘Baby, One More Time’ in her face. Can you imagine how weird that would be?”

“I swear to God the woman sang the whole song, to my face.”

So far so awkward, but Scherzinger later weighed in to say the whole thing was “made out to be something else and I don’t understand why”.

“I don’t understand why anybody would do that,” she said, claiming she’d only crooned the words Promise This to Cheryl.

“It’s been blown out of proportion and it’s silly.”

The feud is a shame, particularly as Scherzy and Cheryl have so much in common.

Both got their start in girl bands formed on reality TV, both have judged on The X Factor and have often strained relationships with Simon Cowell, and both are capable of producing a competent dance floor banger.

Time to call of the quarrel and start swapping presents?
