Nickelodeon is about to give Marvel a run for its money in the movie crossover stakes.
All your favourite 90s cartoon characters are coming together in one epic film called NickToons.
The roll call of old shows is expected to include Rugrats, Ren And Stimpy, Rocko’s Modern Life, Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, Doug, Hey Arnold and a lot more.
It’s just a shame there’s no room for any live-action characters in this all-animated adventure. Kenan & Kel and Clarissa Explains It All are just two classic series who have to miss out in NickToons.
Rugrats was Nickelodeon’s top-rated show for five consecutive years in the 90s. It even spawned its own feature film back in 1998. A Hey Arnold movie followed in 2002.
Paramount, whose parent company Viacom also own Nickelodeon, will release NickToons and have enlisted a pretty impressive director to make it, according to Deadline.
Napoleon Dynamite’s Jared Hess will be calling the shots, with his wife and writing partner Jarusha Hess handling the script.
The duo’s other movies haven’t been the colossal commercial successes of Napoleon Dynamite. However, the Jack Black wrestling film Nacho Libre, plus Jermaine Clement-starring Gentlemen Broncos and Don Verdean have all developed a cult following with comedy film fans.
The Hesses’ next movie Masterminds has been completed, but its release has been held up after its production company Relativity Media went bankrupt.
The comedy boasts an impressive who’s-who of Hollywood’s funniest stars. Bridesmaids’ Kristen Wiig, Horrible Bosses star Jason Sudeikis, The Hangover’s Zach Galifianakis and Zoolander’s Owen Wilson all star. Fast-rising Saturday Night Live star Kate McKinnon, who stars in the new Ghostbusters film, also has a role in Masterminds.
The film follows a night guard at an armoured car company in the Southern US who organises one of the biggest bank heists in American history.
