The latest trailer for the highly-anticipated Tomb Raider reboot has arrived, with Alicia Vikander kicking ass as Lara Croft yet again.

Directed by Roar Uthaug and starring Vikander alongside Dominic West, Walton Goggins and Kristin Scott Thomas, the film looks set to deliver a grittier version of the popular Playstation heroine that the Angelina Jolie original.

Vikander looks and sounds every bit the Lara Croft fans have been crying out for, with the trailer showcasing a more realistic, action-led version of the character, compared with Jolie’s more CGI-led incarnation of the early noughties.

This version of Lara Croft is not to be messed with either, with the trailer showcasing the character’s penchant for dispatching enemies via bow and arrow or whatever other weapons she can get her hands on (one dude gets a scythe in the chest! Ouch!).

Vikander isn’t the only one bringing the heat either, with Walton Goggins also on hand as the film’s main villain and a man you clearly don’t want to be messing with.

Along the way there’s the usual jungle-based action, tombs and assorted bad guys to deal with as part of a film that already feels authentic and more in keeping with the trend for Jason Bourne-style action.

With Indiana Jones fans still reeling from the shambles of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Tomb Raider feels like a welcome tonic and the perfect return to the kind of action adventure movies that have been missing from cinemas of late.

The official synopsis for Tomb Raider reads as follows:

“Lara Croft is the fiercely independent daughter of an eccentric adventurer who vanished when she was scarcely a teen.  Now a young woman of 21 without any real focus or purpose, Lara navigates the chaotic streets of trendy East London as a bike courier, barely making the rent.  Determined to forge her own path, she refuses to take the reins of her father’s global empire just as staunchly as she rejects the idea that he’s truly gone.  Advised to face the facts and move forward after seven years without him, even Lara can’t understand what drives her to finally solve the puzzle of his mysterious death.

“Leaving everything she knows behind, Lara goes in search of her dad’s last-known destination: a fabled tomb on a mythical island that might be somewhere off the coast of Japan.  But her mission will not be an easy one; just reaching the island will be extremely treacherous.  Suddenly, the stakes couldn’t be higher for Lara, who—against the odds and armed with only her sharp mind, blind faith and inherently stubborn spirit—must learn to push herself beyond her limits as she journeys into the unknown.  If she survives this perilous adventure, it could be the making of her, earning her the name tomb raider.”

Tomb Raider arrives in cinemas on March 16.
