Have you always dreamed of making a breakthrough discovery for NASA? If that is actually your life dream, then today is your lucky day!
NASA has decided to make regular citizens part of their program Backyard Worlds: Planet 9. What is Planet 9, you might ask? It’s a planet that astronomers Konstantin Batygin and Mike Brown theorised about in 2016 – sadly, it doesn’t actually exist, it’s only a hypothesis.
That’s where you come in.
The Planet 9 program uses the WISE mission instruments which have a light that can obscure images. Now, scientists need the help of actual humans instead of machines.
The Backyard Worlds website has now millions of videos that NASA has posted so that anyone can help spot Planet 9.
The videos show objects in movement that might as well be Planet 9, but there is also the chance that any of us can spot another planet, or even meteorites or asteroids, which would help NASA prevent a Deep Impact situation.
If Batygin and Brown are right, Planet 9 is ten times the mass of Earth and twice its diameter – so, yes, it looks like a rugby ball. And who hasn’t dreamed of discovering a planet shaped like the head of Stewie from Family Guy?
So, if you want to be part of history books, just get on the website and start looking at the millions of videos. It might take a while, but you never know what you might discover! Good luck.
