What do critics know anyway?
Mrs Brown’s Boys, one of the most lambasted sitcoms of all time, has just been voted the best British sitcom of the 21st century in a poll compiled by the Radio Times and BFI members.
The show beat the likes of The Office, Gavin & Stacey and The IT Crowd to somehow take the top spot.
Mrs Brown’s Boys creator Brendan O’Carroll is naturally delighted about the news, saying: Lost for words… and that doesn’t happen to me very often.
“There is an audience out there that comedy forgot…”
“Myself and Jenny [Jennifer Gibney, his wife and co-star] are dancing around the living room. I can die happy now… but I’ll take my time.
“It vindicates the fans’ belief in the show. They have kept us on the air – it certainly wasn’t the reviewers,” said Brendan O’Carroll, who also created the comedy.
“There is an audience out there that comedy forgot – that Are You Being Served? audience has been left behind. Us winning this award proves that.”
Mrs Brown’s Boys is a ratings juggernaut for the BBC, with the most recent live special delivering more than 8 million viewers.
Naturally, social media can’t quite believe it. How did this happen? Here’s a selection of some of the more entertaining responses…

Mrs Brown's Boys being voted best British sitcom of the 21st century only adds to my utter hatred of the general public.

I assume the panel that voted Mrs Brown's Boys the 'funniest sitcom ever' were either blind, or drunk, or blind drunk?

Mrs Brown's Boys being voters' favourite TV show is literally why we can't have nice things. Also the EU.

To quote Super Hans from Peep Show – people like Coldplay and voted for the Nazis, they just can’t be trusted.
