Matthew McConaughey has signed on to star in a sequel to Spring Breakers, despite few people actually being keen on the idea of a return to the James Franco/Vanessa Hudgens hit.
And that includes the man himself.
Back in 2014, it was first announced that a sequel was on the way.
Spring Breakers: The Second Coming, was to feature none of the characters or actors from the original movie, instead telling the story of a new gang of summer party types going to-to-toe with a militant Christian sect.
Franco wasn’t impressed, taking to Instagram to label the project a “poison ship” that was essentially attempting to cash-in on his work from the original film.
Soon enough, the project was scrapped, with producers instead focusing on the idea of a new web series inspired by the film.
Once again, those involved in the original film, including Hudgens and Selena Gomez, wanted no part in the project, which ultimately died a death.
But, not to be outdone, it would appear that a sequel of sorts is on the way and it’s going to star McConaughey.
Entitled The Beach Bum, Variety claims that movie is set in the same universe as Spring Breakers and will be a “comedy about the misadventures of a loveable rogue.”
It’s nice to hear McConaughey is playing against type again.
Anyway, while a release date of some time in 2018 has been set, no one else has been cast in the movie as yet, which could struggle to find an audience.
Spring Breakers famously polarised critics landing some duff reviews while also earning a place on several top 10 lists for the best film of the year.
A box office success back in 2012, it will be interesting to see if this long-gestating and almost unrecognisable sequel follows suit.
