Work has begun on a new set of films set around the universe established in The Matrix.

The new films will not serve as either a reboot or sequel to the Keanu Reeves classic though, with writer Zak Penn confirming plans during an interview with Screenrant.

Penn, who was speaking ahead of the release of his latest film Ready Player One, confirmed that work has begun on the new films but stressed fans of the original need not worry.

“I’ve been working on Matrix right now. Which is in…a phase right now. That’s a franchise I desperately want to see brought back and, I can’t go in to too much detail, but I’ve been harassing Warner Bros. for years to try to get it going again,” Penn said.

“…both the Matrix and OASIS [the virtual reality world from Ready Player One] are similar in that they are brilliant ideas for universes,” he added. “When it came out about Matrix, people were like ‘Oh no, there going to reboot Matrix’ I was like, Why, I’m not insane.”

The screenwriter has previously spoken about how the new films would look to follow the path set out in the Animatrix and the Matrix comics.

Released on DVD in the build-up to the release of the film’s first sequel, The Matrix Reloaded, The Animatrix presented a anthology of animated short films, showcasing the experiences and backstories of other people living inside the matrix.

The collection was well received by fans and critics alike and even featured in Helen McCarthy’s list of 500 Essential Anime Movies.

In fact, it’s ultimately aged far better than the CGI-heavy, densely-plotted Matrix Reloaded. Maybe this whole Matrix reboot isn’t such a bad idea after all.
