Whatever you think about Mark Wahlberg abilities as an actor one thing is undeniable: the guy is in seriously good shape.
It’s been like that for as long as anyone can remember, with Wahlberg’s prominent pectorals and killer abs a key component behind his early success as the rapper better known as Marky Mark.
In fact, back in 1993, Wahlberg decided to impart his workout wisdom on the world with the release of “Form… Focus… Fitness, the Marky Mark Workout” the most 90s fitness video you could ever imagine.
Largely overlooked by fans since Wahlberg’s emergence as a serious actor, the tape serves as a portal back to a simpler time when the muscles were big, the music was pumping and the baby oil flowed like wine.
Thankfully the arrival of the internet means this rarely spotted gem is available to watch, in its entirety, on YouTube – and it’s a hilarious blast from the past.
“You know, the biggest question people ask me is why am I doing a fitness video,” a very young-looking Wahlberg blankly explains during the intro
“You know, I’m a rapper, but I’ve been into fitness for a while. I’ve learned a lot. I know that you have to learn in order to really key in on the strong points which is form, focus and determination.”
Clearly the word determination was deemed too long for the video title.
“I like being in shape, I’ve accomplished a lot,” he adds, sounding just the teeniest bit arrogant in the process.
Not that Marky Mark is fussed. The hour-long workout that follows features Wahlberg in a semi-permanent state of undress, performing a series of fitness routines, usually accompanied by a scantily clad female companion.
The first section provides a full body home workout routine that involves a lot of bodyweight exercises and dumbbells and takes around 30 minutes to complete. It’s pretty intense too.
It’s only then that Wahlberg cranks things up though, with a three-day bodybuilding course that sees the action head to Gold’s Gym on Venice Beach and even more people wearing next to nothing.
There’s also a handy diet plan, complete with tips like eat four meals a day, never workout while hungry and never miss a meal. Meals are evidently important.
Aside from that, it’s mostly footage of a buff Wahlberg lifting weights, doing presses and generally looking super fit, while a soundtrack by brother Donnie Wahlberg of New Kids On The Block fame pumps away in the background.
It’s unclear whether “Form… Focus… Fitness, the Marky Mark Workout” ended up a success. Wahlberg never released another fitness video and copies can be bought for just $5 on eBay.
It may have helped make him the star his is today though. Well, maybe.
A year on from its release, Wahlberg got his first big break in Hollywood after being cast as Private Tommy Lee Haywood in the hit Danny DeVito comedy Renaissance Man.
The rest, as they say, is history.
