Marion Cotillard first became known to English-speaking audiences after her portrayal of the legendary French singer Edith Piaf in La vie en Rose back in 2007 – a part that won her an Academy Award for Best Actress.
Since then she’s gone on to have starring roles in the likes of Public Enemies, Inception, The Dark Knight Rises and Macbeth. Here we take a look at five of her best performances so far.
Rust and Bone
In Rust and Bone Cotillard plays an amputee killer whale trainer learning to live with her new disability. The role earned Cotillard Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations.
As part of Inception’s huge ensemble cast, Cotillard plays Mal Cobb, the wife of Leonardo DiCaprio’s dream-diving character. Afterwards Chris Nolan described her as “the essence of the femme fatale”. Some compliment!
Last year Cotillard earned high praise for her role as Lady Macbeth in Justin Kurzel’s adaptation starring Michael Fassbender in the lead role.
The Dark Knight Rises
Chris Nolan liked her so much in Inception he cast her in his Batman trilogy closer The Dark Knight Rises. In this film she plays Miranda Tate, a board member of Wayne Enterprises and potential love interest of Bruce Wayne.
La vie en Rose
The role that won her the Oscar. Cotillard’s performance as Edith Piaf was so good she was publicly congratulated by Nicolas Sarkozy, the President of France at the time.
Marion Cotillard will next be seen co-starring once again with Michael Fassbender in the big screen adaptation of the video game Assassin’s Creed, which is due to be released in the UK on January 1, 2017.
