The first full trailer for I, Tonya has finally arrived with Margot Robbie on manic form in the first glimpse of the biopic centring on the story of disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding.
Harding was implicated as conspiring to have Olympic gold medal rival Nancy Kerrigan injured in the build up to the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer.
The film will focus on Harding’s journey from young figure skater, living in relative poverty with her abusive mother, to someone ranked among the very best in the world.
“I was the best figure skater in the world at one point in time,” Robbie says in the I, Tonya clip. “My entire life, I’ve been told I won’t amount to anything.”
Allison Janney plays Harding’s mother, with Caitlin Carver cast as Kerrigan. Captain America actor actor Sebastian Stan Jeff, Harding’s real-life boyfriend and husband, and someone who played a central role in the attack on Kerrigan alongside the skater’s then-bodyguard.
To this day, Harding has insisted she was innocent of any wrongdoing, claiming she ultimately pled guilty to avoid jail time.
“What kind of person bashes in their friend’s knee?” Robbie says to the camera in the trailer. Fans could be about to find out.
Directed by Craig Gillespie, I, Tonya will be released this December.
