Two people were accidentally shot during a discussion about gun control at a church in Tellico Plains, Tennessee, in the US.
The meeting was called to discuss the recent church shooting in Texas but soon descended into chaos when someone asked if anyone brought a gun to the First United Methodist Church.
According to the Tellico Plains Police Department [via WATE.com], a man quickly spoke up to say he carried a gun with him everywhere he goes.
He then pulled the gun out, emptied the magazine and chamber, and started passing the gun around the room.
Things took an unfortunate turn when the firearm was returned to him though. According to police reports, the man proceeded to put the magazine back in the gun and recharged the chamber.
However, in doing so, he also accidentally squeezed the trigger. The gun then went off, with bullets striking the man in his hand and also hitting his wife in the abdomen.
Both were taken to UT Medical Centre by helicopter but neither was said to be suffering from an life threatening injuries.
Their names have not been released, potentially to spare the man any embarrassment.
But if he was hoping to make a point about why Americans should continue to be allowed to bear arms, he’s failed miserably.
It’s not the first time someone in the States has been left red-faced after fumbling with a firearm – this bloke managed to shoot himself in the penis after mishandling his gun. But yeah, the US doesn’t need gun control, right?
